We want all House of Assets members to bid on and buy any luxury item with absolute confidence. The listing of fake, stolen or unauthorised products is strictly prohibited and our systems are designed to ensure every item listed is genuine and covered by any requisite certificate of authenticity.

All sellers must have adequate processes and procedures in place to ensure products are authentic, authorised for sale and neither stolen and counterfeit or an unauthorised copy. You should always ensure you can provide genuine documentary evidence showing that you’re authorised to sell specific brands or products on House of Assets on request.

House of Assets can suspend any listing for products that don’t comply with these terms. Please read our Online Marketplace Terms to familiarise yourself with our strict authenticity terms before listing any item.

Art authentication

There are a number of processes involved in the authentication of an artwork. It begins with provenance – cross-referencing all documentation relating to the piece – this could include invoices, exhibition catalogues and inventory lists. A technical analysis by a conservator will identify the materials used and determine its general age. An art expert will also have considerable knowledge of this field and be familiar with an artist’s style and technique. Provenance, technical analysis and expert opinion are all used in unison to determine the authenticity of a work of art.

Fine wine and whisky authentication

Expert whisky authentication starts with a serious inspection of the bottle. Examining the condition of the seal to spot any sign of piercing and checking the integrity of the bottle, its weight and condition, for example, can reveal a fake to the knowing eye. The condition of the label, regardless of how the bottle has been stored could also flag up any concerns. Labels printed before the 1970s weren’t waterproof and printing processes were not as effective as today’s. If moisture or precision-printed labels are spotted, think twice. An expert whisky authenticator will also examine the ullage or airspace in the bottle, which will increase over time leaving evaporation levels clearly showing. The condition of the liquid and level of sediment is also key. An expert may also use carbon dating to determine the age and precise chemical composition of a bottle of whisky.

Classic car authentication

The authentication of a classic care begins with scrutiny of its documentation, including historical records, paperwork that comes with the car and via databases. Identification numbers, locations and stampings are verified – stampings can be verified using magnetic imaging technology. Metal can be carbon analysed and paint can be subjected to chemical or visual testing and the vehicle’s upholstery can also be examined by experts to prove authenticity. As with art and fine wine and whisky, there’s no substitute for an expert authenticator’s provenance and experience in this specialist field.
